What happens when writing begins not with an idea, but with the body?

Most of us are taught to write from the outside in, start with a thought, find the right words, and arrange them into order. But some of the truest material lives underneath language altogether, the story a hand remembers before the mind does. Curated as part of The Independence Project 2026, exploring the theme of Metamorphosis, this experiential workshop by Actor and Theatre & Film Producer Yuki Ellias asks what happens when we reverse the process, when we let the body speak first, and let writing catch up.

Through simple physical explorations, participants will unlock new rhythms, surface unexpected memories, and awaken the imagination, learning to write from sensation and impulse rather than analysis or habit. As the body moves, language begins to emerge in unexpected ways. images, stories, emotions, and voices that the thinking mind alone may never reach. The process invites spontaneity, play, and deep listening, allowing writing to become more vivid, authentic, and alive.

No previous experience in dance or creative writing is required, only curiosity and a willingness to explore. This workshop is ideal for writers, performers, educators, artists, and anyone interested in discovering fresh pathways into creativity.

Join us to discover how movement can become a catalyst for writing.

Please bring: One piece of clothing that belongs to you, and one everyday object. These will become part of the creative explorations during the workshop.

When Movement Leads the Way: Exploring Creativity with Yuki Ellias

We often think of writing as something that begins with words. A blank page, a fleeting idea, a sentence waiting to be written. But what if stories begin much earlier—in the body, in movement, in the way we experience the world before we try to describe it?

When Movement Leads the Way: Exploring Creativity with Yuki Ellias

This idea sits at the heart of Writing from Movement, a workshop led by theatre practitioner Yuki Ellias as part of an Avid Learning writing workshop at IFBE, Ballard Estate. Bringing together theatre, movement, and creative expression, the session offers participants an opportunity to explore storytelling from a fresh perspective—one that starts with experience rather than expectation.

Unlike conventional creative writing workshops in Mumbai 2026, this programme encourages participants to step away from the pressure of finding the perfect words. Instead, it invites them to move, observe, respond, and reflect. The body becomes the starting point, allowing ideas to emerge naturally before they are shaped into language.

At the centre of the workshop are somatic creative writing techniques, which recognise that memory and imagination are not confined to the mind alone. A simple gesture, a rhythm, or a shift in space can uncover emotions and stories that might otherwise remain hidden. These exercises gently guide participants towards writing that feels personal, instinctive, and grounded in lived experience.

Movement has long been an integral part of theatre, but its role in the creative process often extends far beyond performance. Through this workshop, participants will discover how movement can quiet self-consciousness, encourage curiosity, and help break through creative blocks. Rather than searching for inspiration, they learn to notice it in everyday actions, interactions, and sensations.

For many, Yuki Ellias is known for creating spaces where learning feels collaborative rather than instructional. Through her work, she has consistently explored theatre as a practice of listening, questioning, and discovering. Her workshops are less about arriving at polished outcomes and more about embracing the creative journey itself.

The ideas explored during the session are equally valuable outside the performing arts. Storytelling has become an essential part of professional life, whether in leadership, entrepreneurship, education, or communication

Participants will explore movement as a catalyst for writing, using simple exercises that unlock unexpected ideas and encourage a more intuitive approach to storytelling. Alongside these are alternative creative process exercises that challenge familiar habits and invite participants to think differently. Performers, educators, facilitators, and anyone interested in creative expression will also be introduced to intuitive storytelling tools for performers, offering practical ways to build stories that feel honest and emotionally connected.

Hosted at IFBE as part of the Independence Project 2026, the workshop contributes to the growing list upcoming events that celebrate interdisciplinary learning and artistic exploration. It reflects Avid Learning's belief that creativity flourishes when different art forms intersect and when participants are encouraged to learn through experience.

In an age that often celebrates speed and instant results, the workshop offers something quieter and perhaps more valuable: the chance to slow down, reconnect with the body, and trust the creative process. It reminds us that before every memorable story is written, it is first felt. Sometimes, all it takes is a single movement to discover where the next story begins.
