Culture is a vital driver of transformation, cohesion, and development. It nurtures identities, fosters creativity, and generates innovative responses to contemporary challenges. As India’s cultural and creative economy continues to expand, it plays an increasingly crucial role in driving inclusive growth, reinforcing the social fabric, and positioning India on the global stage.

Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry and Avid Learning presentsCultural Continuum: New Pathways for India’s Creative Economy 2025in partnership with Teamwork Arts, and Art Links Learning.

Over the years, this symposium aims to  provide a platform for dialogue and critical exploration of India’s cultural and creativesectors. The symposium underscores the interdependent relationship between creative ecosystems and innovation and their role in economic growth and social development. Featuring policymakers, practitioners, and scholars, it facilitates the exchange ofknowledge, identification of challenges, and formulation of adaptive frameworks to enable India’s creative sector to navigate a rapidly evolving global landscape.

Following the success of symposiums Mumbai, Kochi, Bengaluru, and Delhi last year, This year's symposium will explore how culture traverses time, space, and form—from historic legacies to contemporary innovations, and from physical infrastructure to digital futures—and will examine new frameworks to empower India’s creative sector to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Arjun Malik

Arjun Malik

Partner, IFBE

Arjun Malik There was always a certain inevitability about my decision to be an architect. It was ultimately the paradoxical nature of the profession, and the belief, through constant exposure to my father’s practice, that architecture, like cinema or literature, was a medium for commentary and personal expression, that led me down this path. I completed my bachelor's in architecture at the Rachana Sansad Academy of Architecture and went on to receive a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University in New York. I returned to join my father’s 30-year-old firm in 2005. Through our work, we have tried to develop an idiom that would reconcile the intellectual and intuitive aspects of architecture, that would provide a tangible link to the past without getting nostalgic, that would be technologically progressive without being experientially stunted, and that would, ultimately, speak through the intangible science of perceptual phenomena. The current overemphasis on the intellectual and conceptual dimensions of architecture has contributed to the disappearance of the physical, sensual, and embodied essence of architecture. In our practice, we focus more on generic metaphors rather than specific analogs, relying on the intuitive reading of context, allegory, and functional parameters to generate topological shifts. Empirical mathematical processes are tempered with the exploration of phenomenological precepts to generate architecture that transcends the merely intellectual and visual and addresses the often-ignored experiential aspects of architecture.

The creative economy, encompassing industries like design, film, music, crafts, architecture, and digital innovation, is among the fastest-growing sectors worldwide. It is rooted in human and imagination, qualities that define India’s diverse cultural landscape. As the global economy increasingly values originality, storytelling, and cultural authenticity, India stands uniquely positioned to lead with its wealth of traditions and creative talent. Beyond its measurable economic impact, the creative economy plays a profound social role and nurtures identities, fosters dialogue, and connects communities across linguistic and regional boundaries. It reminds us that creativity is both an economic engine and a cultural bridge, enabling societies to adapt, innovate, and express their collective aspirations.

As one of India’s oldest and most influential industry bodies, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) has consistently championed innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable growth across sectors. In recent years, FICCI has placed a strong emphasis on India’s cultural and creative economy, recognizing its potential to drive inclusive development, generate employment, and project India’s soft power on the global stage. The organization has been instrumental in convening stakeholders from government, industry, and academia to explore how culture, creativity, and commerce can converge to build a future-ready India. By fostering cross-sectoral collaboration, policy dialogue, and creative partnerships, FICCI continues to shape a national agenda that views culture not just as heritage, but as a vital economic and developmental resource.

Culture remains the pulse of this ecosystem, providing the stories, rituals, and aesthetics that inspire creative innovation. The intersection of culture and creativity represents a space where tradition meets technology and heritage crafts find new life through contemporary design and digital storytelling transforms memory into experience. Across India, this interplay is evident in initiatives that blend the old with the new: from sustainable craft enterprises that employ artisans using modern branding, to film and digital art that reinterpret mythology and history for the present generation. This continuous exchange between cultural legacy and creative experimentation reinforces how deeply interconnected these spheres are in shaping identity and progress.

It is within this larger context that platforms like Cultural Continuum: New Pathways for India’s Creative Economy, presented by FICCI and Avid Learning in partnership with Teamwork Arts and Art Links Learning, become vital. By convening policymakers, practitioners, and cultural thinkers, such initiatives strengthen the dialogue between culture and creativity, helping India’s creative sectors adapt to an evolving world. As India builds new frameworks for innovation and cultural sustainability, the creative economy stands not merely as an artistic endeavor, but as a transformative force, one that bridges heritage and modernity, community and commerce, imagination and impact.
