Two books on famed artist S H Raza: Celebration and Prayer: Life and Light in Raza's Art, and Antima: The Last Art of Raza, by scholar and author Ashok Vajpeyi, take centre stage in this session with art curator Sangeeta Raghavan, chaired by cultural curator Asad Lalljee. The session explores the artist’s life work, the cosmic dimensions of his art, his contribution as co-founder of the Progressive Artists Group in what was then Bombay, and of course, contemplating the Bindu.
The session is an apt precursor to the upcoming exhibition on the last living Progressive Artist Krishen Khanna, which begins on the 10th of November.

Literature Live Mumbai 2025 continues to be a landmark celebration of creativity, bringing together writers, thinkers, and artists to explore the intersections of literature and various artforms. This festival, one of India’s most significant literature events, fosters a space where ideas thrive beyond the page, allowing audiences to engage with contemporary art, cultural narratives, and intellectual dialogue. Through panel discussions, performances and book launches the festival showcases how literature offers a fresh perspective on creativity in modern India. This environment naturally lends itself to highlight the enduring dialogue between Indian philosophy and modernist expression.

Modernism in India, influenced by global movements, sought to experiment with abstraction, form, and new artistic languages, while Indian philosophy emphasized harmony, cyclical time, and the interconnectedness of existence. When these two strands converge, both literature and visual arts gain a depth that bridges rational inquiry with spiritual reflection. In literature, this synthesis manifests through narrative techniques that embrace symbolism, introspection, and layered meaning, inviting audiences to reflect on universal truths through modernist forms. The convergence of these perspectives allows contemporary creators to produce works that are intellectually engaging and spiritually resonant, showing how modernism and Indian philosophy together create a rich framework for exploring the human experience.

S.H. Raza’s bindu paintings are perhaps the most iconic visual articulation of this synthesis. His use of the bindu as a central motif embodies energy, consciousness, and the eternal rhythm of life, making each canvas a meditation on existence. Works like Raza’s Gestation painting demonstrate how colour, geometry, and spatial rhythm converge to create a visual language that is both contemplative and vibrant. For contemporary audiences, the bindu symbolism in Indian art offers insight into the fusion of philosophical depth with modernist experimentation. Platforms such as Sangeeta Raghavan’s Art Musings emphasize that Raza’s oeuvre continues to shape the meaning of contemporary art, showing that spiritual and intellectual inquiry can coexist seamlessly with aesthetic innovation.
