Evolution of Technology in Film
Film as a medium
has evolved drastically over time. The initial films were in monochrome shades,
and it was only during Georges Méliès’ time that two or three-color systems
were introduced around the 1900s. The
Wizard of Oz was one of the first films to start using a three-color system
during the 1930s. Walt Disney released the first animated feature film in
color, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,
in 1937. The first movie to have sound was The
Jazz Singer in 1927. The introduction of color and sound to the movies
carried the medium forward and paved a new direction for the incorporation of
technology.
Applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Films
AI has been
integrated into the process of making films at different stages. AI is used to
write scripts and assist with pre-production, character creation, subtitle
creation, movie promotion, editing, casting actors, predicting the success of
films by analyzing the script, music composition, and even advertising and
target marketing. Jasper AI, ChatGPT, Quill Bot, Grammarly, Dramatron, and Rytr
are used for AI writing and story development. Adobe After Effects, Nuke’s Copy
Cat, Runway, and Move are AI VFX tools. The AI tools used for editing and
transcription include Adobe Premiere Pro, Descript, EditingTools, Blanc, Recut,
TimeBolt, Nova AI, and Veed.io. Color grading can be done with AI tools like DaVinci
Resolve Studio and ColourLab AI.
Future of Film Technology
The film industry
is undergoing a noticeable technological transformation, marked by its embrace
of new technologies and techniques. The integration of AI in various stages of
filmmaking is revolutionizing the way we create, experience, and consume
movies. AI is leaving an indelible mark on the silver screen from
pre-production to post-production. The potential of movie-making with advanced
editing and recording software, 4K and 3D movie technology, drones, and more
will see immense growth as technology assists humans with automated and
data-driven decisions, ensuring efficient business with an increase in
operations and revenue while reducing labor costs. AI will continue to play an
increasingly significant role in shaping our movie-going experiences. From
personalized recommendations based on individual preferences to virtual reality
experiences that fully immerse us in the story, it will elevate the art of
filmmaking to new heights.
AI in Indian and Global Cinema
Cinema enthusiasts
are experiencing the future through the exciting blend of technology and
storytelling in movies. In the upcoming Tamil movie called 'Weapon,' AI has been used to create a
younger version of a living actor. On a global level, movies like 'Ex Machina' have explored
thought-provoking themes surrounding artificial intelligence itself. The
12-minute short film 'The Frost' is
considered to be the first AI-generated film in the world. 'Thank You for Not Answering,' 'PLSTC,' 'Given Again,' 'Expanded Childhood,' 'Critterz,' and 'Suspring' also used AI filmmaking tools.
As technology continues to evolve at an exponential rate, we can anticipate
mind-bending narratives that delve into concepts such as virtual reality experiences
or even entirely AI-generated scripts.
