G20
The Group of Twenty (G20) is the premier forum for international economic cooperation. It plays an important role in shaping and strengthening global architecture and governance on all major international economic issues. Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, the United Kingdom, and the United States are the 19 countries along with European Union form part of Group of Twenty (G20). These G20 members represent around 85% of the global GDP, over 75% of the global trade, and about two-thirds of the world population.
Culture in G20
Culture has been acknowledged as an enabler of growth and sustainable development at an international level. The G20 Declaration of Culture has listed major priorities which include the protection of cultural heritage, culture and the climate crisis, culture and education, creative industries, and digital transition for culture. During the Roman Declaration in the year 2021, G20 Ministers firmly positioned culture as an engine for propelling sustainable socio-economic recovery. The period of Covid 19 pandemic has further led the global community to recognize the catalyzing power of culture in uniting the people to protect the global commons using cultural resources. This led to the establishment of culture as a ‘global public good’ as a specific goal in the post-2030 development agenda. Culture, commerce, connectivity, and collaboration have become the crucial pillars of the course of empowerment of today’s global developmental scenarios.
Integrating Technology with Culture
Digital technologies and innovations have shaped almost every aspect of our lives over the past few years. The profound impact of the digital era is also seen in the cultural sector. It is used by cultural institutions and professionals in various ways to ensure the transmission of vital information regarding heritage in a state of irreversible damage. Digital curation has allowed audiences to experience various kinds of works, ranging from theatre productions or concerts to exploring the cultural riches of a museum or a particular heritage site. Cultural digitization is expanding and it has started to include not just familiar web platforms and technologies or social media tools but also newly emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality as well as robotics. The world of art and culture looks forward to a completely new revolution of preserving, creating, accessing, and experiencing it. Digital technologies like satellite imagery are used to assess the damage to the Ancient City of Aleppo, and 3D documentation of buildings, monuments, and sites across the world is done by UNESCO.
Artificial Intelligence and culture
An extensive branch of computer science concerned with building intelligent machines capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence can be defined as Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI beholds the future as both a tool and a collaborator in the cultural sector. AI unlocks endless possibilities in the process of the creative process for artists, craftsmen, technologists, curators, and all professionals in cultural institutions to not just solve problems but also to innovate, challenge themselves and create and find new approaches to engage the audiences. Sustainable Environment and Ecological Development Society (SEEDS), a disaster management non-profit uses technology to help vulnerable people build long-term resiliency against climate change. Interwoven is another platform by the Museum of Art and Photography developed using AI and machine learning around textile collections. AI-based apps are developed in collaboration with Sol LeWitt Estate which allows the audience to experience the process, life, and works of the artist during a museum visit.
