A century ago, on May 3, Raja Harishchandra, the first full-length indian film, directed by Dadasaheb Phalke, was screened at Coronation Cinema in Girgaon, In the hundred years that have lapsed since, Indian cinema has grown to be the largest in the world, as measured by its prodigious annual output. To celebrate this historical moment, Time Out India has assembled a panel of industry mavens to discuss landmark occasions in the country's cinematic journey.

Film Director & Producer

Nikhil Advani's directorial debut, Kal Ho Naa Ho, was a box office and critical hit, and the filmmaker followed it up with Salaam-E-Ishq, Chandni Chowk to China and Patiala House. Advani's 3D animation film, Delhi Safari (released last year) won a National award. His next film, D-Day, is an espionage thriller.

Kaushik Bhaumik

Film Historian

Kaushik Bhaumik is Deputy Director at Osian’s – Connoisseurs of Asian and Arab Cinema. He is a historian by training and the co-editor of Visual Sense: A Cultural Reader brought out by Breg Publishers in 2008. His monograph on early Bombay Cinema is due next year from Claerendon Press, Oxford. He has published extensively on Bombay and World Cinema and has recently started writing on modern Indian art.

Sriram Raghavan

Sriram Raghavan

Sriram Raghavan is a writer-filmmaker, who started his career with a documentary about the serial killer Raman Raghav. Since then, Raghavan’s made three feature films, Ek Hasina Thi, Johnny Gaddaar, and last year’s Agent Vinod. Raghavan’s known for injecting elements from pulpy ’70s cinema and seeking inspiration from noir in his films. An unabashed fan of Vijay Anand, Raghavan was on the selection panel that picked the 100 Great Indian Film Scenes for Time Out in the 100 years special issue.

Sidharth Bhatia

Journalist & Author

Sidharth Bhatia has been a journalist for over three decades in India and abroad. He was part of the founding editorial team of DNA in 2005 and managed its opinion pages till 2009. He is now a regular commentator on current affairs for Indian newspapers and on television. He has given several talks on politics, urban affairs, popular culture, the media and all things Mumbai. His book, Cinema Modern was published by Harper Collins in 2010 and he is now writing another book on India in the 1960s and ‘70s.
