Sufi Kathak Foundation, Royal Opera House, Mumbai and Avid Learning present an evening of poetry and dance, which brings together the exuberant legacy of Nawab Jaan’s lyrical dance and the profound poetry of Mirza Ghalib. This unique evening will feature Dancer and Choreographer Manjari Chaturvedi along with Actor Ekant Kaul as they seamlessly blend together the dance of the royal courts with the emotive verses of Ghalib. The performance promises to vividly describe through dance and storytelling the significance of Ghalib’s work and the influence of his poetry and the literature of the times on the famous courtesan Nawab Jaan. Come experience the distinctive interplay of history, literature and the performing arts woven together into a multidisciplinary performance at the Royal Opera House, Mumbai!

Manjari Chaturvedi

Dancer and Choreographer

Manjari Chaturvedi, the leading exponent of classical dance in India, is an unusual dancer, she has blazed her own path, that no one traversed earlier, in the field of performing arts. She has taken the traditional form of Kathak to a different level altogether and has created her own style, her own brand of dance. Over 500 concerts in 20 years in more than 30 countries with 405 musicians, her work is vast, Her productions as a dancer are projects that are meticulously researched, documented. Manjari has extensively worked on gender sensitive subjects through her medium of dance, exploring the many traditions woven into poetry, music and dance. She is the founder of concept the series of Understanding Qawwali and The Qawwali Photo Project. Through her work for last twenty years on Qawwali, currently there are more than 300 artists associated with the Sufi Kathak Foundation and she is working on actively archiving and documenting the music form in its traditional form.

Ekant Kaul (born in Srinagar, Kashmir) is an Indian stage, television and film actor from Delhi, who has worked in more than 30 plays with over 1000 performances across the country including a performance for The Former President of India Smt. Pratibha Patil at the President’s House. He has worked with various renowned directors and has been a part of the great productions like Darashikoh directed by the legendary Mr. M.S. Sathyu, Sons of Babur (English) directed by Mr. Tom Alter, August Osage County, Ghalib, Plaza Suite, Tale of the Taj, and many more. Apart from Theatre he has also worked in TV commercials like Haywards 5000 directed by Ashim Alhuwalia and films like “Children of War” along with actors Pawan Malhotra and Farooq Shaikh and a period Story “Dariba Diaries” for Epic Channel and several other short films.
