Sameer Kulavoor

Sameer Kulavoor

Illustrator & Artist

Sameer Kulavoor (b.1983) lives and works in Mumbai, India. His work lies at the intersection of art, graphic design & contemporary illustration and has taken the form of paintings, murals, books, zines, prints and objects. He is interested in why things look the way they do; constantly exploring and understanding the impact that time, culture, politics and socio-economic conditions have on our visible and invisible surroundings. In this age of visual overload, his work involves filtering, dissecting, documenting and defamiliarising commonly seen subjects through the act of drawing, painting and design. Some of the zines he has produced include Sidewalks & Coffeeshops (2009), Zeroxwallah Zine (2011), The Ghoda Cycle Project (poster-book, 2012), Blued (book/zine, 2013) and Oh Flip (flipbooks, 2013). He exhibited The Ghoda Cycle Project at WDC Helsinki in 2012 and in Mumbai in 2013 while also collaborating with Paul Smith on a series of Ghoda Cycle Tee-shirt designs which were released worldwide. He presented select sketchbook drawings from between 2012 and 2016 as large serigraphs at Artisans’, Kalaghoda, in a show titled ‘Please Have A Seat’ (2016). He has been working on a number of large-scale public art projects and paintings which are on view in Auckland (New Zealand), Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi and Chennai. ‘A Man of the Crowd’ (2018) was Kulavoor’s first solo presentation at TARQ. Two of his new works were showcased at the TARQ booth group show at India Art Fair in 2019. Most recently, his drawings and paintings were part of ‘The Shifting City’ – Mumbai pavilion of ‘Making Heimat – Arrival City’ at the Goethe Institut Max Mueller Bhavan curated by Kaiwan Mehta. Malvika Vaswani

Malvika Vaswani

Industrial Designer

Malvika Vaswani is an award-winning designer and maker based in Mumbai. At her studio, she combines the rigour of her background in industrial design, with her own personal inquiry into her rich cultural heritage; imagining concepts that blend emotion with functionality. After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design, she returned to India and immersed herself in learning about the heritage craft traditions found all over the subcontinent. Jewellery was a natural first step – growing up watching her mother making fine jewellery gave her access to locally-trained artisans. While visiting ateliers, she observed a stagnation in form and technique, as the skilled karigars (artisans) who had been working for generations found their livelihoods challenged by modern technology and changing consumer preferences. She began to explore how technology – rather than a barrier – could be a means to evolve traditional ways of making; coupled with educating artisans about marketability and international quality standards. In 2013, she was awarded by India Design Forum in the jewellery and textiles category. Her collections of jewellery and homewares attempt to recontextualise materials and techniques into contemporary designs. Inspired by iconic architecture and design movements such as the Bauhaus and Art Deco, every piece is ethically handcrafted. Her work has been recognised by Grazia, where she received the Young Fashion Award and presented her runway show at Lakme Fashion Week; and Vogue India’s Fashion Fund, where she was a finalist in the accessories category. In 2017 she was also selected among the 20 under 35 designers, as part of the Design x Design competition in New Delhi. As Malvika’s practice evolved, so did her commitment to using sustainable materials and practices, devising economical ways to reduce the ecological footprint throughout the product lifecycle. She broadened her focus to encompass the Indian design ecosystem – partnering with various organisations to empower artisans through skills training and mentoring, at times acting as a mediator between international brands and makers.Sustainable Jewelry Collection by Malvika Vaswani: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHTTlXiviyY&list=PLYt7Q44R5xkd4dRefvV3nFloOHEePgLAZ&index=5

Jitish Kallat

Jitish Kallat

Contemporary Artist

Jitish Kallat (Indian, b.1974) is a painter, sculptor, photographer, and installation artist best known for work that celebrates the city of Mumbai, using a visual language derived from popular advertising. Born in Mumbai, Kallat studied painting at the Sir J.J. School of Art, and rejected his training in Modernism and abstraction to create early works based on references to the billboards and popular culture of Mumbai. Kallat portrays the socio-economic and political circumstances of the city in a way that emphasizes its liveliness and resilience. His Dawn Chorus (2007) series, for example, shows street urchins with hair that forms a web of traffic and pedestrians; he mounts these paintings on sculptures made from wall decorations found in a 120-year-old train station in Mumbai. Kallat’s photographic work includes a series called Cenotaph (A Deed Of Transfer) (2007), which documents the demolition of a row of slums, suggesting the progressive but sometimes brutal consequences of modernization in Mumbai. Kallat’s Public Notice Works (2003–2010) series—large-scale installations that displayed Jawaharlal Nehru’s speech of 1947 on a reflective surface, Mahatma Gandhi’s 1930 speech on fiberglass letters, and Swami Vivekananda’s speech during the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition on LED displays—were shown at the Art Institute of Chicago. Kalla’s work has been exhibited at the ZKM Museum in Karlsruhe and the Tate Modern in London, and his work is held in several collections, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and the Saatchi collection. He lives and works in Mumbai. Rethinking Biennales with Contemporary Artist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2EK3KE8Kps&list=PLYt7Q44R5xkd4dRefvV3nFloOHEePgLAZ&index=22

Siddharth Sirohi

Siddharth Sirohi

Designer and Co-Founder of BARO

Siddharth Sirohi is a Mumbai based designer who co-founded Baro in 2016. His vision was to marry the gravity of old wood and traditional techniques to the lightness and play of contemporary palates, and create individually crafted pieces of handmade furniture. He believes that in the reduced spaces imposed by urban environments, it is essential to shrink the visual weight of a piece through the ‘lightness of being’, while maintaining the timelessness of self-assured furniture. While an easy simplicity and gentle playfulness in the designs create moments of joy. Attention to tiny details ensures a constant sense of discovery as one lives with the piece. The heart of every piece, however, lies in the emotional intelligence of the design process - a critical understanding of human behaviour and emotional response to something that lives in your space with you. The softness and warmth of diligently sanded surfaces, the smooth sound of drawers sliding on wooden rails, the satisfying click of a closing door, the way a spring responds to your weight, the way the furniture in a room asks you if you want to stay. This sensory perception adds a quotient of happiness and a sense of well-being. This approach relies on a constant study of people and our physical and emotional bodies. Furniture should be created to last and the patience spent on the composition and construction of a piece needs to mirror that. This is the key to good design, he says. The symbiotic process of design and construction while working with craftsmen, leads to a constant evolution of the process. He also strives for sustainability, and so the pieces are creating by using reclaimed teak, that is then painstakingly brought to an exquisite finish using linseed oil and beeswax. Siddharth was awarded the first ever Lexus India Design Award for Furniture and interior accessories in 2018. He also has a film career spanning over 15 years in Production Design, which earned him a Filmfare nomination for the film, A Death in the Gunj. He is a Yoga practitioner, an active mountaineer, a photographer and a painter. He studied Mathematics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, after completing his schooling from the prestigious Doon school. Maya Burman

Artist

Maya Burman (born Villeneuve sur Lot, France, 1971) has a versatile artistic practice that embraces diverse media and projects, including painting and drawing, as well as mural commissions, posters, and illustrations for books. Burman was trained as an architect at the Ecole Nationale d’Architecture Paris-Villemin and the Ecole Nationale d’Architecture Paris-Belleville during the 1990s. She spent a gap year at the Centre for Built Environment, Kolkata, working on a survey of the historic North Kolkata residential quarter, associated with the Bengal Renaissance. Maya Burman’s watercolours and pen-and-ink works are peopled by pneumatic figures, usually depicted in moments of play, festivity or ceremonial, expressive of an abundant joie de vivre or what, in the Indic tradition, would be celebrated as lila, the cosmic spirit of play and creativity. The dancer, a key protagonist in Burman’s art, draws on diverse genealogies, among them Degas’ ballerinas and the folk and classical dancers of eastern India. This is consonant with Burman’s transcultural background: her mother is the French artist Maïte Delteil; her father is the Indian artist Sakti Burman. Maya has held several solo exhibitions with Art Musings, including ‘Once Upon a Time’ (2007), ‘A Dreamer’s Labyrinth’ (2010) and ‘Rhapsody’ (2014). The artist lives and works in France. Garima Gupta

Artist and researcher

Artist and researcher, Garima Gupta’s field of interest and study stretches from ornithology, topographical alterations and nuances of behaviour patterns between man and wild, primarily in the Southeast Asian archipelago. Gupta’s ongoing studies of the wildlife hunters in the rainforests of New Guinea, wildlife bazaars in various Indonesian islands and taxidermy related trade in Thailand draws a layered image of concerns such as environmental catastrophe and large-scale loss of wildlife. Her drawings and documentaries trace patterns of destruction from different historical periods, ruminating the connection between imperialist iconographies concerning wildlife and its mirror images lurking in the psyche of modern-day east. Gupta presented an intermediate stage solo show, Minutes of the Meeting at Clark House Initiative in 2017 from her ongoing research in New Guinea. The show travelled to the Dhaka Art Summit (Bangladesh), Para Site (Hong Kong) and Museum of Modern Art (Poland) in the year 2019. Tarik Currimbhoy

Tarik Currimbhoy

Architecture and Sculpture

Classically trained in the Arts, Industrial Design and Architecture, Tarik Currimbhoy is a trifecta of artistic prowess. Having earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Architecture from Pratt Institute, as well as a Master of Arts from Cornell University, Tarik went on to teach at both institutions (Drawing at Cornell and Design at Pratt). In both architecture and sculpture Tarik searches for tranquility, and simplicity and tactility expressed in purity of both form and material. Inspired by ancient architecture of building blocks resting on each other in tension and compression. Tarik’s sculptures are stories of structure and gravity, held together under compression in both stone and metal. “The essential issues that are explored in Tarik’s sculptures are those of gravity, balance, movement, stasis and all addressed with formal beauty and fineness that belays the underlying exactitude of the mathematical calculations. The scientific is presented with the magical imagination that compels us to probe into the world of rules laws not always associated with the subjective expressiveness of art. We partake in this feast of unexpected connections to learn about the endless possibilities of artists’ vision to shatter the accustomed understanding of creativity and perception of beauty.” Artists Behind the Art with Tarik Currimbhoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mghEKrvLWU&t=256s
