Discovering New World Cinema in India: A 101 Film Appreciation Workshop about a new era of fearless and original Indian regional filmmakers beyond Bollywood, and why their internationally acclaimed films are so exciting. With Meenakshi Shedde, winner of India’s National Award for Best Film Critic, Jury Member at 20 international film festivals, including Cannes, Berlin and Venice, and South Asia Consultant to the Berlin and Dubai International Film Festivals. Get introduced to conceptual frameworks of film appreciation, and watch a curated reel of trailers/film clips of trailblazing regional films that have won praise and prizes at international film festivals worldwide. The workshop will also include a guest appearance by a filmmaker, who will share his/her journey as a filmmaker, interact with the audience and spell out the mantra behind making cinema that stands out.
Meenakshi Shedde is South Asia Consultant to the Berlin and Dubai International Film Festivals. Winner of India’s National Award for Best Film Critic, she has been Jury Member for 20 film festivals, including the Cannes, Berlin and Venice film festivals. She has been India/Asia Curator/Consultant to festivals worldwide, including the Toronto, Locarno, Busan, IFFI-Goa, Kerala, Mumbai and Colombo Film Festivals. A senior journalist, she freelances for Variety, Screen, Cahiers du Cinema, Times of India, Forbes and Midday, and reviews regional Indian films on India Indie Club, CNN News18. A filmmaker, and mentor to film critics’ labs worldwide, she has written for 14 books.
