The FICCI Creative Industries Division and Avid Learning present Smart Cities, Art Cities: A Summit for Building Creative Industries in India. This special day-long conference will focus on the state of creative industries in India. Leading voices will come together to discuss best practices, troubleshooting issues and infrastructure building. Industry experts, policy makers and game changers will come together to share success stories, examine case-study models and have a meeting of minds to ideate on finding solutions to the need for education, infrastructure, building ecosystems and improving policies.

Abhay Mangaldas

Abhay Mangaldas

Heritage Entrepreneur, Convenor of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH)

Abhay Mangaldas is the founder and director of The House of MG and Mangaldas Havelis, a cluster of three Heritage Hotel and B & B experiences in revitalised structures ranging from 110 to 300 years old in the UNESCO World Heritage City of Ahmedabad. He is the Managing Trustee of Shreyas Foundation, an educational institution for children (Founded by Leena & Manorama Sarabhai and designed by Pritzker prize winning architect B.V. Doshi where Madame Montessori was the first president and includes India's first Balgram SOS village for destitute children) and the Convener in Ahmedabad for INTACH. He spent the last two decades restoring and revitalising tangible and intangible heritage in Ahmedabad. His ongoing work includes completing two more galleries to showcase master crafts (he already manages two), implementing a Model Heritage Street and Smart Signage project for the city’s civic body, creating a pop-up retrospective exhibition of his experimental work with art and technology (with some of India’s leading contemporary artists) for the Kochi Biennale and prototyping a pre-engineered modular pod, an alternative self-contained design for weekend homes, outhouses and resorts. Abhay holds an MSc degree in Mass Communication from Boston University, USA with a Computer Animation Major. He lives and works in Ahmedabad.

Smriti Rajgarhia

Director, Serendipity Arts Foundation

Smriti Rajgarhia is Director of the Serendipity Arts Foundation and the Serendipity Arts Festival. Trained as an architect with a Masters in Design, Smriti began her career in the arts fourteen years ago working with a private archive in New Delhi, where she eventually created a museum space and archive for the collection. During this stint, her interest expanded into bringing art to the public, and contextualising art within the region through arts education and awareness. Smriti has also curated exhibitions on subjects that reflect the history and relevance of archives. From running a bespoke furniture manufacturing unit where she designed furniture, to working with exhibition space design, Art and Design are two spaces that Smriti is keen to continue working with, and often explores design through print media as well. Currently, she is leading the Foundation and working on the Serendipity Arts Festival to bring her passion for Art and Design to the forefront by creating unique opportunities for creative individuals. With these two platforms, she endeavors to explore newer forms of representation and re-contextualise the kind of programming institutions need to engage with to widen the demographic of the audience for the Arts in India. Her personal interest also lies in adapting urban spaces to presentation of the arts, reclaiming the urban and questioning the impact of art and cultural interventions for a city/state/country.

Founder and Artistic Director, The Danceworx Performing Arts Academy

Ashley Lobo is considered to be one of the people who spearheaded international dance in India. He is the Founder & Artistic Director of both The Danceworx and Navdhara India Dance Theatre. His career in performing arts comprises of over 32 years of performing, choreographing, and teaching - in India and overseas. He trained in Australia at the Bodenweiser Dance Centre and at Sydney Dance Company. Ashley has developed Prana Paint™, a unique sensitizing approach that explores movement through yoga, breath, connectivity, and touch. This notable technique has put him on the international map and has led to him being invited to teach and choreograph overseas. In 2017, he was invited to create a full-length contemporary dance production for The Ballet Chemnitz in Germany. He is doing the same for a ballet company in Austria in 2019. Ashley has choreographed extensively for stage & cinema, with over 30 feature films to his credit.

Tasneem Zakaria Mehta is Managing Trustee and Honorary Director, Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, Mumbai, Former Vice Chairman and Mumbai Convenor, Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage. She is an art historian, writer, curator, designer and cultural activist who has successfully pioneered the revival and restoration of several cultural sites in Mumbai. She conceptualized, curated, designed and implemented the restoration and revitalization of the Museum and the ongoing exhibitions and outreach programmes. The Museum won UNESCO’s 2005 Asia Pacific ‘Award of Excellence’. The Museum was nominated for the prestigious Prudential Eye Awards for Asian Contemporary Art in 2014 and the International Quality Crown Award (IQC), Gold category, 2016. Ms Mehta prepared the Vision Document for the proposed Railway Museum to be set up at the CSMT. Mrs. Mehta is a member of International Council of the Museum of Modern Art, New York and has served on several Museum boards and high level government committees. She was among 2 senior experts sent by the PMO to advise the Bangladesh government on the refurbishment of their museums and cultural sites. She is a former chair of the Task Force on Culture for CII.

Creative Co-ordinator, Dharavi Design Museum on Wheels

Kruti Saraiya is a graphic designer/ typographer based in Mumbai. The focus of her practice has been to allow for a contemporary Indian design narrative to emerge to fill the gap between MTV kitsch and traditional Indian crafts. As a typographer, she sees her role in infusing context into letters and bringing the written word alive. Her strengths lie in working with scripts of Indian languages to create an equal space for them alongside English in urban India. Her commercial and experimental work celebrates the Indian aesthetic in a fusion of east and west. 'The key', she says, 'is to change our mindset from an either-or to an AND.’ Besides this her portfolio includes branding, packaging, editorial and web design across verticals. She has been a speaker at the Indian Design Forum – IDF 2013, Behance Portfolio Review, Surat and a conference exploring ‘Design as a Global agent for social development’ in Amsterdam. She has conducted several Typography workshops – ‘What’s Your Type’ at Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum and Type Talk at Design Day, to list a few. She was also a part of the core team to set up Design Museum Dharavi (2016) and continues to expand the project as the creative co-ordinator. Her work has also been published in International design magazines like Creative Review (UK) & Visible Language (USA) and on the online magazine – desi creative. She has exhibited in a group show ‘Pushpa Patha: The Flower Trail’ in gallery BMB, Mumbai. She graduated from the London School of Printing. She has worked with Rabia Gupta Designs, Mumbai and taught at Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology, Indian School of Design and Innovation (ISDI) and Ecole Intuit for several years. She currently has an independent practice and conducts typography talks and workshops.

Paul Abraham is a banker of 35 years and is currently the Chief Operating Officer (COO), at IndusInd Bank. Paul has founded a museum initiative under the name Sarmaya Arts Foundation along with his partner Pavitra Rajaram. The Sarmaya collections span multiple genres e.g. Contemporary art, indigenous tribal art, 19th century photography, prints and engravings, old maps and coins. He wishes to use this collection through the medium of a museum and well-structured outreach programs with young children and youth to build awareness and an abiding love for heritage in general and India’s arts and culture in particular. He also sits on the advisory Boards of the Sanctuary Nature Foundation and the Hinduja Foundation. Paul has a Post Graduate Degree in Business Management from IIM Ahmedabad and has graduated from St Stephen’s College Delhi where he did his BA in Economics (Hons).

Sangita Sinh Kathiwada qualified as a graphic designer and has further studied jewellery designing, interior decoration, photography, and silkscreen printing. A combination of inherent talent and design education led to the creation of Mélange, the premier fashion house of India which opened its door to Mumbai city in 1992 in a 100 year old wine cellar. With a commitment to incorporating the latest design with ancient Indian handicrafts, she went on to establish The Morarka Cultural Centre at the prestigious National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA). She drew the attention of the city to its magnificent heritage architecture by painstakingly arranging path breaking Fashion presentations at the Royal Opera House, Faramji Kavasji Hall and the Mumbai University Convocation Hall. She served on the board of Osians and helped take the institution to great heights and committed her time for education and awareness for the Contemporary arts and crafts of our country. With a keen eye for aesthetics, Sangita has designed and restored over a dozen heritage properties across India belonging to her family. She painstakingly restored the 105 year old Kathiwada Raaj Mahal in Madhya Pradesh near Baroda.

Deepa Gahlot writes extensively on cinema, theatre, the arts, women's issues for several publications and websites. She has won the National Award for Best Film Criticism, edited several cinema journals. Her work has appeared in anthologies on women's studies and cinema--Bollywood Popular Indian Cinema, Behind the Scenes of Hindi Cinema A Visual Journey through the Heart of Bollywood, Janani among others. Her books published include The Prithviwallahs (co-authored with Shashi Kapoor), biographies of Shah Rukh Khan and Shammi Kapoor, Take 2: 50 Films that Deserve a New Audience and Sheroes: 25 Daring Women of Bollywood. She headed the Theatre and Film department of the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Mumbai for seven years, where she curated festivals and produced path-breaking work.

He also has directed numerous plays in different languages in India, the US, UK, and Japan. Jehan founded Theatre Professionals in 2008 and The Drama School Mumbai in 2013. Jehan has most recently received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar for his organisation’s work in the advancement of the practice of Theatre.

Deshna Mehta is a visual artist with a passion for photography, design, writing and curation. A graduate of Sir J.J Institute of Applied Art, followed by a masters in Graphic design from the London College of Communication and a masters in Visual Communication from the Royal College of Art in London, she moved back to India seeking to find meaning within her own design practice. Dr. Jabbar Patel has an M.B.B.S. (1968) and is the founding member of ‘Theatre Academy’, a group of young theatre workers in Pune. He has directed famous plays like Ashi Pakhare Yeti (1970), Ghashiram Kotwal (1972) both by Vijay Tendulkar, Teen Paishyacha Tamasha (1978) by P.L. Deshpande and Padghum (1984) by Arun Sadhu. He directed his first film in Marathi – Samana in 1975 which was an official entry to the Berlin International Film Festival. Since then he has directed a number of Marathi films like Simhasan, 1979, Umbartha, 1981, the last of which brought him more international acclaim. In 1994, he directed the Marathi film Mukta which won the National Award and the 1995 Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration. He has also directed a Hindi film, Musafir starring Rekha and Naseeruddin Shah in the year 1986. His Documentary on 'Indian Theatre' is still widely used as a part of Theatre studies at the various Drama schools worldwide. His documentary on the great icon Pt. Kumar Gandharva and the legendary Santoor player Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma were selected in the Indian panorama of the Goa international film festival and also in the Kerala international film festival. His historical biopic, an international venture, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar released in English, Hindi and nine other Indian languages, won the national awards for Best English Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Art Director. In 1980, Dr. Patel, was awarded the prestigious Padmashree and has also been awarded the prestigious Punya Bhushan in 2002, the Vishnudas Bhave award in 2014 for his contribution to Marathi theatre and recently, the prestigious Gadima award for cinema and theatre. He was a member of the governing council of the Sangeet Natak Academy, the National School of Drama (New Delhi) and was the Vice-Chairman of The Film and Television Institute of India. He also headed the prestigious Pul. Deshpande Maharashtra Kala Academy as its first Executive Director. Currently, he is the Chairman and Director of Pune International Film Festival, the Director of Yashwant International Film Festival – Mumbai, Orange City International Film Festival – Nagpur, and Solapur International Film Festival. He is also the Chairman of MIT School of Film & Television and the Dean of the Art faculties of MIT University of Art, Design & Technology.

Sabyasachi Mukherjee has undertaken extensive modernization, including refurbishment of the museum’s main building and the establishment of a conservation center, new galleries and educational initiatives. In 2010, In recognition of his initiatives UNESCO awarded 2010 Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation. Mr. Mukherjee has organized numerous art exhibitions and international shows and has overseen publications, conservation projects, exchange programs and archive projects in partnership with museums worldwide. Mr. Sabyasachi Mukherjee is also Director of the Postgraduate (Diploma) Program in Museology and Art Conservation at the CSMVS Institute, University of Mumbai. A frequent lecturer and active member of many professional committees, more particularly, the Bizot Group (a distinguished group of American and European museum Directors). Mr. Mukherjee has been a fellow of the Nehru Trust and the Salzburg Global Seminar. He holds MA in Museology and MA in Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology from Maharaja Sayajirao University. Recently, the Senatus Academicus of the University of Edinburgh has invited Mr. Mukherjee to be admitted to the degree of Doctor 'honoris causa' for transformation of the CSMVS Museum to a vibrant, engaged, cultural catalyst in Mumbai.

Shivaprasad Khened is currently the Director of the Nehru Science Centre and National Gallery of Modern Art, (NGMA) Mumbai. He has served as Director of Science Museum in Delhi and Bangalore. He is credited with more than 50 scientific papers, exhibition catalogues and articles. He has curated several exhibitions on varying subjects and his latest exhibition is the Cricket Connects: India–UK exhibition. The “Information Revolution” gallery, which he co-curated won the Dibner award instituted by the Smithsonian. His other curatorial works include; Our Technology Heritage, Our Science and Technology Heritage, 100 Years of Nobel Prize, Human Genome and Beyond, Our Body Guards (Immune System), Pulses the Smart Food, Cricket Connects exhibition for Australia and South Africa. He is also involved in the setting-up of the National Museum of Indian Cinema in Films Division campus. One of the exhibition that he curated “Sir M Visvesvaraya: The Legendary Nation Builder”, was selected for the “Pride of India” award for exhibition, which he curated and exhibited during the 102nd India Science Congress, at the Mumbai University. He is the recipient of the Smithsonian scholarship (1988) and the 16th NES, Jagadguru Shankaracharya, H.H, Sri Jayendrasaraswathi, National Eminence Award (2017). Under his able leadership, Nehru Science Centre received the prestigious National Award (2017) for the Best Communication Campaign (External Publics) instituted by the Public Relations Society of India for the exhibition “The Future of Food: Pulses”.

He is the Vice-Chairman of the Services Export Promotion Council (SEPC) and an independent director of ECGC (Export Credit Guarantee Corporation), Ministry of Commerce, Government of India. Maneck has over 38 years of experience in print journalism and publishing having written for and worked with major Indian newspapers and magazines. He is associated with many public organisations. He is the Chairman of the Kala Ghoda Association which conducts the annual Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, with over four lakh visitors every year and which repairs and refurbishes heritage monuments in the heritage district of the city. He is the Managing Trustee of the Make-A-Wish Foundation India, which fulfils wishes of over 7,000 children with life threatening ailments every year. He is Chairman and Trustee of The Society for the Protection of Children in Western India, which runs the 100-year old Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Home for children whose 125 residents are abandoned and orphaned children. He is the President of SHED, Society for Human and Environmental Development founded by Mrs. Bilkis Latif, wife of the former Governor of Maharashtra, Air Marshal Idris H. Latif. He is the Hon. Secretary of Apne Aap Women’s Collective which works with commercial sex workers and their children in the city’s red light district.

Sanjoy K. Roy an entrepreneur of the arts, is the Managing Director of Teamwork Arts, which produces over 25 highly acclaimed performing arts, visual arts and literary festivals across 40 cities in countries such as Australia, Canada, Egypt, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, UK and USA, including the world’s largest free literary gathering — the annual ZEE Jaipur Literature Festival. Roy has received the National Award for Excellence and Best Director for the film Shahjahanabad: The Twilight Years. He is a founder trustee of Salaam Baalak Trust (SBT) working to provide support services for street and working children in the inner city of Delhi where over 55,000 children have benefited from education, training and residential services. In 2011, the White House presented SBT the US President’s Committee of Arts and Humanities Award for an International Organisation. Roy works closely with various industry bodies on important policy issues within the cultural space in India and is a senior office bearer on several committees working on policy infrastructure for the creative industries - he is Co-chair of the Art and Culture Committee of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and President of Event and Entertainment Management Association (EEMA).

Malvika Singh is the Publisher of Seminar, a prestigious monthly magazine of ideas and alternatives, founded in 1959. She is the Author of several books including Perpetual City: A Short Biography of Delhi, Bhutan: Through the Lens of the King, New Delhi: Making of a Capital, Delhi: India in One City, and Snowdon’s India. She has also edited a number of books on Delhi, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Chennai and Mumbai. She has extensive experience as a journalist both in the print media as well as films and television having conceptualized and set-up the broadcast station, TVI, the first live private news channel, and television arm of the Business India Group. She was Associate Publisher, Business India Group and Editor of The India Magazine (till 2000). She has produced several documentary films, among them: The City that Jaisal Built; The Legend That is Chittor; The Kalbelias: Nomads of Rajasthan; The Tapestry That is Kashmir; The Bird and Animal Life of Rajasthan, etc. She is a Trustee of the Ranthambhore Foundation and Founder member of Rehwa Society, working to revive the Maheshwari sari in India. Malvika has revived a series of Sari Collections including Indira Gandhi’s Collection, the Prem Bery Collection, and a Caftan Collection for Rajasthan Heritage Week. She is on various advisory boards of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, the National Culture Fund, India Brand Equity Foundation and is Member of the Advisory Board of the Chief Minister of Rajasthan. She served as Vice Chairman of INTACH between 1995-98, and was member of its Governing Council and Managing Committee. She has been a member of the UNESCO Sub-commission on Communication, the publications division of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), and the Governing Council, National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad (till 2002). She has served as consultant with the Handlooms and Handicrafts Corporation of India (HHEC). She graduated as a theatre director from the National School of Drama and Asian Theatre Institute (New Delhi). Malvika was decorated as a Dame in the civil merit honours list of the King of Spain 2009.

Vinita Srivastava is presently posted as Joint Secretary & Mission Director, looking after the National Mission on Cultural Mapping in the Ministry of Culture. She is an officer of the Indian Railways Service of Mechanical Engineers of the 1994 batch. She did her schooling from Loreto High School & College, Lucknow, and completed her graduation in Engineering after qualifying through the UPSC's prestigious Special Class Railway Apprentice scheme in 1991. Vinita's an Executive MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and a Chevening Scholar in Science, Innovation & Research from the Said Business School, Oxford University, UK. She has over two decades of experience in technology and administration in a variety of roles including design, research and operations. She has been on deputation to Central Government since 2013 in the Ministries of Steel and of Heavy Industries, where she was responsible for the administration of government PSU's by advising their corporate boards on governance and program implementation. Formulating guidelines and proposals for closure of chronically sick units with sensitivity towards their human resources and infrastructure have been a key contribution. In the Ministry of Culture, Vinita Srivastava was initially administrator of IGNCA, a multi-disciplinary Centre for Arts in all their forms. Now she is entrusted the charge of the National Mission on Cultural Mapping, an endeavour to compile artist & art form data nationwide. Co-Founder, St+art India Foundation & St+art Mumbai 2017 Urban Art Festival Curator

Giulia Ambrogi is a contemporary art curator. With a Master in History of Contemporary Art and Management of Cultural Heritage, she started her career in MAXXI Museum, a contemporary art museum in Italy. Subsequently, she committed to spread the culture of public and urban art, with a focus on the Italian and Indian landscape. She curated and initiated few Street Art festivals in Italy in 2007 such as Memorie Urbane in Gaeta and Sanba in Rome. From 2011 to 2014 as an expert in Street Art and Public Art, she practiced teaching in the Master Course of Management of Cultural Heritage at Il Sole24ore Master Classes as well as hosting lectures in several universities in Italy and India. In 2014, she co-founded St+art India Foundation, India’s first platform for urban and public art. Since then, she has been working in cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore curating various public art projects. In 2016, she curated India’s first art district in Lodhi Colony, Delhi and went on to curate Maqta Art District in Hyderabad and Mahim Art District in Mumbai in 2017. Along with these projects, she also has curated experiential street art exhibitions such as WIP: The Street Art Show in New Delhi and Sassoon Dock Art Project in Mumbai.
