HarperCollins India, Royal Opera House, Mumbai and Avid Learning present a panel discussion and book launch of Film Director and Author Meghna Gulzar’s new book Because He Is… which showcases a rare facet of Gulzar, the icon that all of us know and love, that of a father. Gulzar is known as a prolific man who has excelled as a film-maker, screenplay and dialogue writer, lyricist par excellence, author and poet.  In iridescent prose, Meghna, documents his life, revealing the man behind the legend in poignant detail. Beautifully designed and illustrated with never-before-seen photographs, Because He Is… offers an incredible insight into the bond between a father and a daughter.

Join us for a rare opportunity in which these two stars in their own right will share the stage to discuss the book and their lives and journeys together. They will be in conversation with Filmmaker and Screenwriter Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. The evening will include celebrities from the film industry paying tribute to Gulzar Saab as well as recitations of some of his best-loved poems and songs.

Poet, author, lyricist, film-maker, screenplay and dialogue writer

Gulzar; Poet, author, lyricist, film-maker, screenplay and dialogue writer, Gulzar is one of the towering figures of Indian cinema, culture and literature. Born in Dina (now in Pakistan), his career in cinema took off as an assistant to film-maker Bimal Roy. Apart from being a film-maker with a difference, he is undoubtedly one of the finest lyricists of Hindi cinema. A stalwart of Indian literature and one of the finest poets in Urdu/ Hindustani, he has a number of poetry and short-story collections to his credit. He recently published his first novella, Two. He is also one of the finest writers for children in the country. He is a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Padma Bhushan. In 2008, he was awarded an Oscar for his song 'Jai ho' in Slumdog Millionaire. He received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2014.

Meghna Gulzar

Film director and author

Meghna Gulzar began her professional career in 1989 as a freelance writer for The Times of India. A graduate in sociology from St Xavier’s College, Mumbai, she has also done a short course in filmmaking from the Tisch School of Arts, New York University, New York. She assisted her father on Maachis and Hu Tu Tu. Along with scripting her own films, Meghna has made documentaries for Doordarshan, directed videos for several music albums and also anchored several TV shows including The Amul India Show. Her first feature film was Filhaal… (2002). Her film based on the Noida double-murder case of 2008 – Talvar – garnered rave reviews and tremendous audience appreciation worldwide. Meghna’s latest feature film Raazi has received both critical acclaim and audience appreciation, becoming one of the biggest box-office hits of 2018. She is currently working on her next film, based on the life of Field Marshal Sam H.F.J. Manekshaw MC.

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is a director, writer and producer who established Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra Pictures (Romp) in India. Romp has cultivated in them an attitude to pioneer the way for the new wave and new age cinema from India, by identifying talent (writers & directors) from India and telling Indian stories to the world. Rakeysh has written, produced and directed the film Rang de Basanti (Color of Sacrifice) (2006), with an ensemble of Indian and International cast. Rang De Basanti won 4 National Awards (President's Medals), was India's official entry to the Oscars 2006- 2007 It was also nominated by British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) in the Best Foreign language film category 06-07. Rakeysh went onto make Delhi -6 (2009) which is set against the backdrop of the caste and religious divide of the Indian social fabric. His film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013) was set in the backdrop of when India gained freedom from the British in 1947, and the bloody ethnic violence that led to the massacre of thousands and the displacement of millions.
